Hummingbirds in winter

Hummingbird in winter.

Winter hummingbirds in black and white. I took these photos of my little friends during a cold snap that we had at the end of last year. Black and white suits the chilly winter setting and brings out some of the details in their feathers.

Hummingbird having a winter snack: Processed using the GIMP's built-in filters: color to gray and desaturate.
We had to put a cozy on the feeder to keep the nectar from freezing.
Little green humming bird on a winter bare fig branch. Looks like it is trying to bland in and escape teh notice of the crows. Processed using the Nik's SIlver Effects Pro, high key fine art preset.
“Don’t mind me, I’m just another fig.”
Holding still for a change, this hummingbird sat on a maple branch long enough that I could get its feathers in focus. Processed using the Nik's Silver Effects Pro, high key fine art preset.

This winter I’ve been enjoying watching the hummingbirds. They are a little less colorful than they are in the summer, perhaps to blend into the background.

I used the GIMP, with an older version of the Nik plug-in, to convert the images to black and white. The first was done using the GIMP’s built-in filters, using two different filters then layering the effects. For the last two I used a Nik Silver Effects Pro preset: high key fine art with a frame.

If you are interested in playing with the GIMP’s monochrome abilities check out my post: Black and white digital photo processing using the GIMP.

  1. I’m rather fond of that Silver Efex high key fine art preset – I thought I recognised it in your shots! Very effective for these little birds 🙂
