Blossoms emerging

Pink plum blossoms starting to emerge.

Some early blossoms emerging. These ornamental plum blossoms are the first fully blooming ones I’ve seen this year.They emerge at different times from year to year, so I hypothesize that they are triggered by temperatures more than hours of light. But it could be some combination. Hopefully they won’t be nipped in the bud by a sudden cold snap.

The photos were taken with my Sony RX10iv camera, F/4 and ISO 100. I used Raw Therapee, the radiance filter in Topaz Studio 2 and the GIMP to process these photos. My basic workflow.

I used Raw Therapee for basic edits and raw conversion, Topaz Studio 2 to apply a painterly effect, and the GIMP to resize and add a vignette and watermark. I used the worflow described in: Photo processing workflow: preparing photos to use on the web using open-source software.

As the year winds down, our area is often rather gloomy. Some people call it “the big dark”, which sounds more dramatic than it is. I think of it as “winter light”. When the weak winter sun manages to drift through the clouds the low angle of the winter sunlight creates beauty in the mundane. Yesterday was such a day.
