Sunflowers in black and white

Even with the color removed, the sunflower looks like the sun, glowing against the sky.

To get the look

I used two methods in the GIMP open source software to convert the photo to black and white, color-to-gray and desaturate. Then I combined the layers using the soft light blend mode. After that I added a light vignette. Black and white digital photo processing using the GIMP, describes tools available for black and white inside the GIMP.
