Real Golden Arches: Pont du Gard

Pont du Gard in Provence, France.

Visiting Pont du Gard was a highlight of my recent trip to France. After a gray, rainy morning, the sun came out for us. The dramatic clouds made the scene even more beautiful. The sunlight accented the Pont du Gard’s arches. At times the arches jumped out of the landscape when lit by a chance sunbeam.

This gallery presents a variety of views of the arches of Pont du Gard in Provence France.

The Romans built Pont du Gard for an aqueduct that carried water 31 miles to what is now the city of Nimes. Although the bridge is an engineering marvel, I chose to spend my brief time looking at the real thing.

I missed out on the interesting looking museum on the site. When time is limited you always have to make choices. I felt it was possible to learn most of the material in the museum from other sources. But I was never going to be in the physical presence of this wonderful bridge again.

  1. Real golden arches indeed! I’d love to see this bridge and like you I think seeing the actual bridge trumps time in a museum of you don’t have long in the area πŸ™‚

  2. The best arches I know. My last visit was well before I had a decent camera, though! Thanks for showing them. I like the last one best – they really look golden and stand out amongst the green trees.
